iSwirl 450 Hybrid Solar + Wind Industrial Roof Ventilator

The world's first hybrid solar + wind industrial roof ventilator

The iSwirl 450 is a unique hybrid ventilation system designed for warehouses, factories, manufacturing facilities and other industrial and commercial buildings.

Developed through a collaboration between iSwirl and Ampelite, the iSwirl 450 combines conventional wind-driven ventilation with independent solar-powered mechanical extraction.

The result is improved airflow performance, particularly during periods of low wind when conventional rotary ventilators are least effective.

1. Independently Tested Performance

The performance of any roof ventilator varies according to factors including wind speed, temperature differential, stack height, pressure differential and building configuration.

The iSwirl 450 has been independently tested against the Standard SV450 under comparable operating conditions.

At a 3m stack height under nominal operating conditions, independent testing demonstrated up to 99% higher airflow — approximately 2× the airflow of the Standard SV450.

Exceptional Low-Wind Performance

The benefit of hybrid wind + solar technology becomes particularly significant when wind speeds are very low.

Independent testing demonstrated that the iSwirl 450 can provide up to 34× greater extraction in very low wind conditions compared with the Standard SV450.

This is important because conventional wind-driven roof ventilators can deliver very little extraction during low-wind periods — potentially when ventilation is most needed.

*Performance results relate to the specified independent test conditions and should not be interpreted as guaranteed airflow under every installation or operating condition.

2. Why Hybrid Solar + Wind?

Traditional industrial roof ventilators rely primarily on wind. When wind velocity falls, their ventilation performance also falls.

The iSwirl 450 combines two independent ventilation systems:

Wind drives the ventilator whenever natural airflow is available.

Solar powers an internal fan whenever sufficient solar energy is available.

When both are available, the two systems work together to provide enhanced extraction.

This allows the iSwirl 450 to maintain more effective ventilation across a wider range of operating conditions — without requiring connection to mains electricity.

3. How Many iSwirl 450s Do I Need?

Ventilation requirements vary according to building size and volume, roof height and configuration, internal heat loads, available make-up air and the ventilation objective.

For preliminary planning, the following guide provides a practical starting point.

Quick Selection Guide

Application

Preliminary Guide

3,000 m² Example

General warehouse / moderate heat load

1 per 125–150 m²

20–24 units

Typical warehouse / industrial

1 per 100–125 m²

24–30 units

Higher heat load / reduced natural airflow

1 per 75–100 m²

30–40 units

Process ventilation / high heat loads

Engineering assessment

Project specific

Simple Rule of Thumb

For a typical warehouse or industrial building, allow approximately 1 × iSwirl 450 per 100 m² of floor area as a preliminary design starting point.

Indicative range: 1 unit per 75–150 m², depending on building configuration, heat load and ventilation objectives.

This guide is intended for preliminary selection only. Final ventilation requirements should take account of the particular building, application, relevant standards and project requirements.

4. Higher Performance. Fewer Roof Penetrations.

Higher airflow from each ventilator can potentially reduce the number of roof penetrations required to achieve a comparable level of ventilation.

The following comparison demonstrates the relative extraction capacity of the iSwirl 450 and Standard SV450. It is not a recommended ventilator quantity for a 1,500 m² building. For preliminary project sizing, refer to the Quick Selection Guide above.

Illustrative Performance Comparison

For a 1,500 m² industrial facility with a 3m effective stack height:

Standard SV450

396 m³/hr

788 m³/hr

Illustrative number of ventilators

18

9

Illustrative total extraction

7,128 m³/hr

7,092 m³/hr

Under these specific assumptions, 9 iSwirl 450 units provide approximately the same total extraction capacity as 18 Standard SV450 units.

This demonstrates the potential to achieve comparable ventilation capacity with approximately 50% fewer roof penetrations.

Why Fewer Roof Penetrations Matter

  • Lower installation costs
  • Fewer roof penetrations
  • Reduced installation time
  • Lower ongoing maintenance
  • Cleaner roof appearance
  • Greater design flexibility

Engineering Note: This example is illustrative and demonstrates the relative reduction in ventilator numbers based on the stated airflow conditions. It is not intended as a project-specific ventilation design. Final ventilator quantities should be determined according to the building, application and applicable design requirements.

8. Common Questions

Why choose iSwirl 450 instead of a conventional wind-driven ventilator?

Conventional roof ventilators rely on wind alone. The iSwirl 450 adds independent solar-powered mechanical extraction, allowing it to provide significantly greater airflow under certain operating conditions.

Under nominal independent testing at a 3m stack height, the iSwirl 450 delivered 788 m³/hr compared with 396 m³/hr for the Standard SV450 — approximately 99% higher airflow.

What happens when there is very little wind?

This is where the hybrid system provides one of its greatest advantages.

When wind is very low but sufficient solar energy is available, the internal solar-powered fan continues to provide mechanical extraction.

Independent testing demonstrated up to 34× greater extraction than the Standard SV450 under very low wind test conditions.

Does the iSwirl 450 require electricity?

No mains electricity is required.

The internal fan is powered by the integrated 50W solar panel, eliminating mains electricity consumption and associated electricity running costs.

Does it work at night?

The solar-powered fan requires sufficient sunlight to operate.

However, the iSwirl 450 also operates as a conventional wind-driven ventilator and can therefore continue to provide ventilation at night whenever sufficient wind is available.

Can using iSwirl reduce the number of roof vents required?

Potentially, yes.

Because each iSwirl 450 can provide substantially higher extraction than a Standard SV450 under comparable conditions, fewer units may be required to achieve a particular ventilation capacity.

For example, at the 3m nominal test condition, 9 iSwirl 450 units provide approximately the same tested extraction capacity as 18 Standard SV450 units.

This is a relative performance comparison rather than a recommendation that 9 units are sufficient for a particular 1,500 m² building. For preliminary sizing, refer to the Quick Selection Guide above.

What standards and installation requirements apply?

The iSwirl 450 is independently tested and designed for industrial roof ventilation applications.

Installation should be undertaken in accordance with the supplied installation instructions, applicable Australian Standards and relevant roofing requirements, including HB39 where applicable.

Project-specific requirements should be confirmed by the appropriate building or engineering professional.

Solar + Wind = Superior Ventilation

The iSwirl 450 brings together Ampelite's experience in industrial roof ventilation with iSwirl's patented hybrid wind + solar technology.

The result is a high-performance industrial roof ventilator designed to deliver:

Higher airflow. Better low-wind performance. No mains electricity. And potentially fewer roof penetrations.
