iSwirl 300 Residential Solar + Wind Roof Ventilator

More airflow when you need it — powered naturally by both wind and solar.

The iSwirl 300 is a patented hybrid roof ventilator that combines traditional wind-driven ventilation with a solar-powered internal fan.

Unlike a standard whirlybird that relies on wind alone, or a solar-only ventilator that relies on sunlight, the iSwirl uses both wind and solar to provide more consistent roof-space ventilation across changing conditions.

1. Proven Airflow Performance

Airflow from any roof ventilator varies according to factors including wind speed, temperature and pressure differentials, stack height, throat size and the particular installation.

For this reason, iSwirl has been independently tested by VIPAC Australia under controlled conditions.

Under like-for-like controlled testing against a standard whirlybird, the iSwirl delivered up to 30× greater airflow under the tested conditions.

The important difference is the hybrid design. When wind is low but the sun is shining, the solar-powered fan provides active extraction. When solar energy is unavailable, such as at night, the ventilator can continue to operate when wind is available.

There is no electrical connection required and no additional running cost.

2. How Many iSwirl 300s Do I Need?

The number of roof ventilators required depends on the size and volume of your roof cavity, roof pitch, available replacement air and other installation conditions.

3. Already Have a Whirlybird? Retrofit iSwirl

If you already have a standard whirlybird, you may not need to replace the existing flashing and throat.

The iSwirl 300 has a 300mm throat, compatible with many standard whirlybird installations with an approximately 300–306mm throat.

Simply remove the existing whirlybird head and attach the iSwirl to the existing throat in accordance with the installation instructions.

If you are retaining your existing throat, select the "Without Throat" option when ordering.

If your existing throat is not the correct size, an iSwirl throat and flashing can be purchased separately.

The iSwirl 300 was developed in Australia as a high-quality hybrid ventilation solution designed to combine the advantages of wind and solar ventilation in a single unit.

It incorporates:

Common Questions

Does the iSwirl switch off in winter?

No. The iSwirl does not have an on/off thermostat or temperature sensor.

Roof ventilation is useful in both summer and winter. During summer, ventilation helps remove hot air from the roof cavity. During winter, continued air circulation can help reduce moisture, condensation and the conditions that contribute to mould and mildew.

The solar-powered fan operates when sufficient solar energy is available, while wind can continue to drive the ventilator independently.

Will the iSwirl make my house colder in winter?

The iSwirl ventilates the roof cavity, rather than the occupied rooms below.

A properly insulated ceiling separates the roof space from the living areas. Maintaining roof-space ventilation during winter can help manage moisture and condensation within the roof cavity.

Good ventilation is therefore important throughout the year, not just during hot weather.

Will rain get through the ventilator?

The iSwirl 300 has been independently tested under wind and rain conditions.

Testing included wind speeds of up to 50 km/hr, with water applied to the unit at approximately 1.36 litres per minute, without meaningful water penetration.

We have also had no reported leakage issues across our installed product base.

As with any roof penetration, correct installation and flashing are important to maintaining a weatherproof roof.

Can iSwirl be used in Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) areas?

The standard iSwirl 300 is not supplied as a BAL-40 rated product.

For installations in bushfire-prone areas, an appropriate stainless-steel ember mesh/guard can be installed within the 300mm throat.

BAL requirements depend on the property's BAL classification and construction requirements. If your property is in a designated bushfire-prone area, we recommend confirming the appropriate ember protection and installation requirements for your particular property before installation.

Does iSwirl require electricity?

No. The internal 24V brushless fan is powered by the integrated 24W solar panel, so there is no need to connect the iSwirl to household electricity and there are no electricity running costs.

Does it work at night?

Yes — when wind is available.

The solar-powered fan requires sufficient sunlight to operate, but the iSwirl is also a wind-driven ventilator. This means it can continue providing ventilation at night whenever there is sufficient wind.

This is one of the key advantages of combining wind and solar rather than relying on solar power alone.

Is it suitable for metal and tiled roofs?

Yes. The iSwirl 300 is suitable for both metal and tiled residential roofs. Its variable-pitch flashing allows it to accommodate different roof angles.

The flashing is approximately 500mm × 500mm, with a 300mm diameter throat.

Who can install an iSwirl?

Installation is similar to installing a conventional whirlybird or roof ventilator.

Detailed installation instructions are available, and installation can generally be undertaken by a suitably experienced roofer or installer.
